Dagje weg vanaf Santa Rosalia? Ga naar Elche.
Elche heeft het grootste palmbos van Europa. Meer dan 200.000 palmen, ooit aangeplant door de Moren, nu Unesco werelderfgoed. Midden in de stad ligt de Huerto del Cura, een tuin waar je een uur rondloopt en vergeet dat je in een stad bent.
De blikvanger is de Palmera Imperial. Eén stam, zeven armen, bijna 200 jaar oud. Hij is zo zwaar dat hij met stalen banden en een frame overeind wordt gehouden. Genoemd naar keizerin Sisi, die hier in 1894 op bezoek kwam.
Verder: een cactustuin vol gouden bolcactussen, vijvers met mandarijneenden en kunst tussen de palmen.
Onze tip: ga in de ochtend, loop daarna de stad in voor lunch en neem een doosje dadels uit Elche mee. Schaduw genoeg, dus ook prima op een warme dag.
Half uur rijden. 2000 jaar terug in de tijd. 🏛️
Het Romeinse theater van Cartagena lag eeuwen verstopt onder een woonwijk. Nu is het een van de mooiste uitjes vanaf Santa Rosalia.
Onze tip: ochtend theater, lunch aan de haven, middag terug aan het meer. ☀️
